Austin-Weston specializes in breast enhancement surgery, including breast implants, breast augmentation, breast lifts and breast reductions for Northern Virginia, Maryland & Washington, DC.

Breast augmentation is a procedure that is open to any woman over the age of 18 who is still a good candidate for surgery. As women age, the rationale for breast augmentation may change, but this is not as important as your health and your desire to have the surgery.

If you would like to talk about breast augmentation, we would be happy to discuss the procedure with you in person, regardless of your age. Please call or email us to schedule a consultation at The Austin-Weston Center for Cosmetic Surgery in Reston, Virginia today.

FDA Age Restrictions for Breast Implants

One of the only age restrictions that exist is the FDA’s recommendation for the use of breast implants. Saline breast implants are recommended for women ages 18 and older. Silicone breast implants, on the other hand, are recommended for women ages 22 and older. Otherwise, women of any age can have the procedure, if their health allows them to be candidates for surgery.

Popular Ages for Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic plastic surgery procedure in the United States, according to statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). According to the ASPS, it is also among the most popular procedures for every age group of women below age 55. However, most breast augmentation procedures are performed for women in their 20s and 30s. These two age groups account for nearly two-thirds of all breast augmentations.  But women aged 40-54 still represent a significant portion (28%) of all breast augmentation surgeries, and thousands of women 55 and over have breast augmentation every year.

Are You a Candidate?

Your health is more important than your age in determining whether you are a good candidate for breast surgery. Important factors to consider are:

  • Am I in good general health?
  • Am I free of active infections?
  • Am I not currently pregnant or nursing?
  • Am I free of cancer and pre-cancers of the breast?
