How do I decide which breast implant size to select?

The size that a patient selects for their Breast Augmentation Implant is a very personal decision. We work with you to help you select the breast implant that gets you to your goal size by “trying on” Breast Implants of different sizes from our extensive collection. Remember, however, that cup sizes vary from different bra manufacturers. We have found it is best to select the breast implant based on how you look with the Breast Implants rather than to go for a specific “cup size.”

Are there any benefits to saline or gel breast implants?

We currently offer both saline and silicone gel Breast Implants to our patients. Breast Implants come in a variety of shapes, styles and profiles and are all FDA approved. Each offers a level of security and patients can choose the best for them. Ultimately, you make the decision and choose the breast implant best for you!

Should Breast Implants be placed under or over the muscle?

We recommend that your physician evaluate you and based on your anatomy, a recommendation will be made specific to you. Breast implants are typically placed under the muscle for the most natural look.

What do the Breast Implants feel like?

In general, breast implants feel firmer than your own breast tissue. Also, the appearance and feel of augmented breasts depends on how much breast tissue the patient had pre-operatively. Gel breast implants may be an option for the most natural result.

What types of incisions do you offer for Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Our physicians at the Austin-Weston Center for Cosmetic Surgery provide the option of many different breast surgery incision sites. Incisions can be made in a number of places. For example, incisions made at the crease are usually easily hidden, and allows for easy access for the physician to create a pocket. Another incision site lies beneath your areola. This site is recommended for patients who have little or no breast tissue and there is the possibility you would see the incision at your breast-fold. The third incision site is located at your arm-pit. This method is an option, but not everyone is a candidate. It will require additional surgery time and the use of additional surgical equipment including a scope. Because of the special equipment and increased surgery time, there is an increased fee for this incision site.

How old do I have to be to get breast implants?

We do recommend that patients give themselves time to fully develop before considering any Breast Implant Surgery. Patients under 18 years of age will need to have a release from their parents or guardian. Silicone gel breast implants are available to patients over 21 years of age.

Who is too old to get a breast augmentation surgery?

Breast augmentation surgery can be performed from an age of 18 years old on up. You are NEVER too old to improve the appearance of your breasts!

Can breast augmentation surgery affect nipple sensitivity?

A very small percentage of patients complain that they have experienced nipple sensitivity after Breast Augmentation Surgery. Our surgeons at the Austin-Weston Center for Cosmetic Surgery take great care during your breast enhancement surgery to avoid injury to the nerve supply to the nipple/areola complex.

Can breast implants interfere with a Mammogram?

Mammography centers are well accustomed to performing mammograms on patients who have breast implants. They will perform the mammogram using different views and they may take additional pictures. Some degree of breast tissue may be hidden by the implant, however, some patients elect to get a mammogram prior to their surgery and this is advisable for some patients depending on age and family history.

What is capsular contracture?

Scar tissue forms around the implant and is called a “capsule.” Occasionally, this capsule can tighten and shrink down and this can cause the implant to feel hard. This capsular contracture can sometimes be corrected with medicine. But other times, surgery will be required to release the capsule tissue and to possibly replace the breast implant.

What medications should I stop before breast augmentation surgery?

Patients must not take any products containing aspirin or ibuprofen 2 weeks before their surgery. We also advise our patients not to take any herbal or weight loss medications. Our staff will be happy to go over any other medications we do not recommend you to take prior to your surgery. You will also be given a complete list during your pre-op visit at the Austin-Weston Center for Cosmetic Surgery.

What can I expect post-operatively after my breast augmentation surgery?

Most patients experience moderate to significant discomfort following their breast implant surgery. Many patients are unable to sleep because they are not used to sleeping on their backs. Soreness of the back and neck may be related to this difficulty finding a comfortable position. Some patients choose to use 2 pillows and sleep in a reclined position. For the past few years, we’ve offered patients a “pain pump” to help ease them through the first few days of recovery. This rubbery ball-like container holds 3-5 days worth of local anesthetic and squeezes it into the implant pockets through thin tubes. The pump sits inside a small fanny pack, which you wear around your waist.

How long is the recovery after my breast augmentation surgery?

Recovery after any breast augmentation surgery varies from patient to patient. Most patients are feeling back to normal at 2 weeks, however, it can take longer. We do advise our patients to take it easy 2-4 weeks following their surgery.

How long do I need to be off of work after breast augmentation surgery?

We recommend that you take approximately one week off of work after breast augmentation surgery and continue to avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for 2-4 weeks after the breast enhancement surgery. Patients should not drive while taking any narcotic medication.
